Celebrations!

Looking back at this year's harvest festival, members of the Nigerian community here at St Laurence's took part in leading the service in celebration of 50 years of independence. Starting off in the hall, the procession led into the church:

and after mass a fine time was had by all in the church hall!

Many thanks to John for providing the photos.

Choir trip

You can see some photos from the choir's half term trip to Tuscany here . Some stunning scenery! (The countryside, that is, not the choir ...!). Thanks to Jeremy for sharing his photos.

New Bishop of Southwark

Our Area Bishop (Bishop of Woolwich) has been announced this morning as the new Bishop of Southwark.

I'm sure many of us will have fond memories of his visits to St Laurence's, both on 'Bishop's visitation' and at confirmations.

We wish him well and send him our prayers as he prepares to take up his new appointment.

Coming up

The mornings are beginning to feel really Autumnal now. The daylight hours are shorter and the heating is being serviced. Time perhaps to see what we can look forward to in the next few weeks!

Next Sunday (3 October) we will be celebrating Harvest Festival with a special family mass. Everyone is invited to bring non-perishable food items to be placed at the altar, later to be distributed by LewCAS to asylum seekers who live locally. This year's Harvest Festival will also include a special contribution by the Nigerian community, which will be the first in a series of services where we celebrate the diverse heritage of our congregation. Refreshments will be served in the hall afterwards by the Mothers' Union and the Nigerian community.

Admission to Communion classes start soon, and there will be an introductory meeting for children aged 8 to 13, and their parents, after the Harvest Festival.

Our new mini-choir is starting on Friday afternoons for children aged 4 to 7. Thirty minutes of singing games start at 4pm (doors open at 3.30pm). This is a great opportunity for children who are perhaps too young to join the church choir, and gives them free singing lessons!

The new church lighting is nearly finished, and we are just waiting now for some of the replacement light fittings to arrive. The new lights in the narthex and the ambulatory are already in place and make quite a difference!

And finally .... tickets are now on sale for the annual Autumn Dance on 30 October - 8 till late!

Men at work!!

This week the electricians have been hard at work on our new lighting scheme, which has of course involved lots of cabling and discovering the delights of the old wiring!

They put up a scaffold tower and the new circular fitting for the spotlights was delivered:

then it was carefully lifted into place:

and fixed into position:

Well done, guys and thanks for putting up with the paparazzi!!

The tower has now been dismantled and everything cleared away for the weekend's weddings and Sunday services, and they have to put it all back together again on Monday!

Services this Sunday

Electricians are at work inside the church this week and next, as they upgrade the wiring and install our new lighting scheme, which is planned to make the church brighter and much more energy efficient. All work takes place at times when the church is closed, so there should be no disruption to worship!

This Sunday the banners in church and the priests' vestments all change to a festive white, for the solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Sunday morning services are: 8am said mass, 10am sung mass. There's no evening prayer on Sundays during August.

During the week, mass will be celebrated in the Lady Chapel on Tuesday at 7.30pm and on Wednesday at 10.30am (followed by tea/coffee - everyone welcome of course!).

Catching up!

Our Director of Music, Huw Morgan, recently gave an organ recital at the beautiful church of St John the Evangelist, Upper Norwood to an appreciative audience, and you can read a review here

Oops!

Hello, poor little blog. Sorry I've been neglecting you recently. It's nothing personal, just that the office has been very busy, and very hot, but I'm determined not to moan about the weather bearing in mind we didn't really get a summer at all last year!

Weekday mass times are 7.30pm on Tuesdays and 10.30am on Wednesdays during August, and we'll try to have the Lady Chapel open as often as possible for a 'quiet space' amidst the noise and bustle of Catford.

The next healing mass (with laying-on of hands and anointing for those who desire) will be next Tuesday, 3 August at 7.30pm. This is a beautiful, quiet service in the Lady Chapel lasting about half an hour and is a great introduction to the Church's ministry of wholeness and healing, so do come along if you'd like to find out more.

In the main church, we are hosting the Mothers' Union deanery service on Tuesday 10 August at 8pm. You don't need to be a member - or a mother - to come along!

Free concerts

Last week's organ recital received an excellent review, which you can read here. A good photo too!

The concert was the latest in our regular series of Saturday morning organ recitals. The next one is on 13 February, when our recitalist will be Tom Little, from Southwark Cathedral.

Recitals start at 11am and last for around 30 to 40 minutes, and are followed by coffee and biscuits, so they make an ideal break to the Saturday morning routine of shopping etc! All recitals are free, with a retiring collection for the church choir's music fund.
